Common Natural Disasters
The most common natural disasters in Australia include:
Droughts
Droughts are defined as rainfall over a three-month period being in lowest decile of what has been recorded for that region in the past. Droughts occur when there is very little rainfall, impacting both the natural and man-made environment. Droughts affect the natural environment by dehydrating and killings crops, drying and cracking the land, reducing breeding stock, threatens permanent erosion of the land. All of these effects clearly damage the economy in Australia, by reducing the amount of export.

Floods
A flood is an overspill of water that covers a section of land that is not normally covered by water. Whilst some floods occur without much problem, others may cause devastating destruction and significant loss of life. Floods can occur in many different ways, an example of this is when a volume of water such as a river or lake overflows, due to the build-up of rainwater, or when strong winds blowing across the sea that make huge waves which surge onto the land and flood coastal areas. These environmental effects mean that water escapes its usual boundaries, which can lead to many problems environmentally, economically and socially.

Bushfires
The natural hazard I have chosen is bush fires A bush fire “is an uncontrolled fire in the trees and bushes of scrub land . There are many different types of bush fires. Firstly there are grass fires which burns grass and scrubs. Grass fires usually occur on grazing lands or farm lands and can destroy fencing, livestock and lives. Grass fires can spread at a very rapid pass.
The next type of bush fires is forest fires which burn forests. In Australia these forests are generally made up of eucalyptus trees which once alight can be very hard to extinguish due to the amount of vapor in the eucalyptus leaves. If the tops of these trees lights on fire the fire can spread a lot easier because of the huge fire ball shooting up at the top of the tree as the leaves burn, then the wind just blows the fire and sparks to the next tree.

Tropical Cyclones
A tropical cyclones is a storm system characterized by a low-pressure system center surrounded by a spiral of arrangement of thunderstorms that produce strong winds and heavy rain. Tropical cyclones affect the natural and man-made environments in many ways. They can devastate sections of land by tearing through houses, buildings and natural sections of land, killing many flora and fauna.
